Custer County in South Dakota encompasses over 1,573 square miles with 1 mile being water. Much of what is considered the Southern Black Hills is in Custer County. Harney National Forest, Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park and Jewel Cave are all located within this spectacular county. The caves are truly majestic; the amazing sites below the earth will leave you in awe. The infamous Harney Peak, which is the highest point in the whole state with an elevation of 7242 feet, is located in this county as well. The views from Harney Peak are truly amazing, the sites, the wildlife, the hills are hard to describe in words; the hike to the top is definitely worth it! The city of Custer, with a population of 1,239 has a great deal of historical places to view and visit. Custer county is a truly a must see, offering tons of entertainment and spectacular views!
