Louis & Clark lake is the southern most reservoir found on the Missouri River in South Dakota. This lake is named after the famed explorers Louis & Clark whom traveled through South Dakota on their trip to find the west coast of the United States of America. Louis and Clark lake is approximately 25 miles long with a maximum depth of about 50 feet. The lake runs from dam near pickstown, SD to Gavins Point Dam Yankton, SD. The majority of the Reservoir does share the boarder with the state of Nebraska. Make sure when docking and fishing their to have the proper licensing. There are many nice recreation ares on Louis & Clark lake most of them located in the southern region of the reservoir. This is a great place to bring your family because of numerous amenities and friendly activities. Many people indulge in water sports. Other activities include horse back riding, biking, hiking, and hunting. There are many places to access the lake with your boat. In the height of the tourist season some of the boat rams can become congested. Here is a link to the South Dakota Game fish and Parks website for current regulations and fishing forecasts. Louis & Clark lake hosts great Walleye, Northern Pike, Catfish, and other game species. There is an awesome fish hatchery near Gavins Point Dam and a marina. There are many great campgrounds in this area including Louis & Clark State park which is one of our favorites. Also Yankton, SD provides many amenities and outfitting options.

The majority of the outdoor opportunities are found near Yankton, South Dakota. This area has several public and private campgrounds with cabins. Local resorts host both upscale and budget amenities. Midway, Gavins Point, and Lewis & Clark recreation areas all provide a good space for people to explore. There are multiple swimming beaches in the area. Lake Yankton located below the Dam has pan fish with good shore fishing for kids. There are several boat docks and a marina near Yankton. Make sure to visit the fish hatchery for a great learning experience. Lewis and Clark lake is the lifeblood to the economy in this region. The revenue created through farming and local business has been re invested into very nice recreation areas.
